Ted DiBiase claimed the WWF World Heavyweight Championship through a storyline purchase. After Andre the Giant “won” the title from Hulk Hogan in the twin-referee finish on The Main Event, Andre immediately handed the belt to DiBiase as part of DiBiase’s scheme. WWF President Jack Tunney later ruled the championship could not be transferred that way, stripped it from DiBiase, and vacated the title, which led to the WrestleMania IV tournament to crown a new champion.
